Wolf Pack Weekly, January 22-28

Wolf Pack Weekly, January 22-28

Jan 22, 2018

The Wolf Pack (17-20-3-3, 40 pts., .465) rung up a pair of home overtime wins this past week, to move past Springfield and into seventh place in the Atlantic Division.  On Friday night at the XL Center, 18-year-old rookie center Filip Chytil netted his first career North American pro OT goal, and added an assist, as the Wolf Pack edged the Utica Comets, 3-2.  Defenseman Ryan Sproul scored both of the Wolf Pack’s goals in regulation in that game.  Then on Sunday, Alexandar Georgiev posted the Wolf Pack’s first shutout of the 2017-18 season, stopping 43 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguin shots, and another rookie, defenseman Vince Pedrie, found the net in overtime, as the Wolf Pack defeated the Penguins by a score of 1-0.

This week:  The Wolf Pack head into the AHL’s All-Star break with three games, including a pair at home vs. the divisional-rival Charlotte Checkers.  The Wolf Pack start the week with a visit to Utica Wednesday night, for a 7:00 PM game, and then welcome the Checkers to the XL Center for a 7:15 date on Friday night, and a 7:30 rematch on Saturday.

Wednesday, January 24 at the Utica Comets (Vancouver) at the Adirondack Bank Center, 7:00 PM

  • This is the last of four meetings on the season between the Wolf Pack and the Comets, and the third battle in a span of two-and-a-half weeks.  The Wolf Pack have won two of the three games between the two teams, including a 4-1 victory November 18 in the only previous encounter in Utica.
  • After Friday night’s overtime loss to the Wolf Pack in Hartford, the Comets rebounded for a 4-2 home win vs. Syracuse the next night.  Utica (20-14-5-3, 48 pts., .571) now has at least a point in five straight games (4-0-1-0) and 11 of its last 13 (8-2-1-2), and is only four points behind the Crunch for third place in the North Division.
  • Comet forward Nikolay Goldobin, who assisted on both Utica goals Friday night against the Wolf Pack, had three more helpers in Saturday’s Comet win vs. Syracuse, increasing his scoring totals to 7-18-25 on the year, in only 22 games.

  • The Checkers come into this week at 24-17-0-1, for 49 points and a .583 points percentage, and currently hold down the fourth-place spot in the Atlantic Division.  Head Coach Mike Vellucci’s club has won three of its last four games, after dropping six of the previous seven.
  • Charlotte has two 20-goal-scorers on its roster, Valentin Zykov (21-10-31 in 37 GP), who is tied with Texas’ Curtis McKenzie for the AHL goals lead, and rookie Warren Foegele (20-12-32), who is part of a three-way tie for third in the league.
