This week: The Wolf Pack celebrate the turn of the calendar year with three games this week, two at home. On Wednesday night, New Year’s Eve, the Pack will be in Portland for a rematch of this past Saturday’s game with the Pirates. Faceoff is 7:00 PM. Then the St. John’s IceCaps invade the XL Center for back-to-back games Friday and Saturday. Both of those contests are also 7:00 starts.
Wednesday, December 31 at the Portland Pirates (Cross Insurance Arena), 5:30 PM
- This is the third meeting of the year between the Wolf Pack and the Pirates, and the Pack’s first visit to the newly-renovated Cross Insurance Arena, formerly known as the Cumberland County Civic Center. The Wolf Pack swept the two games between the two clubs in Hartford, 2-1 on October 18 and 3-1 this past Saturday.
- Portland recovered from Saturday’s loss to the Wolf Pack by shutting out the Eastern Conference-leading Manchester Monarchs Sunday in Manchester, 3-0. That was only the second win in the last nine games (2-6-1-0) for the Pirates (16-15-1-0, 33 pts.), who are tied with Providence for second place in the Atlantic Division.
- Veteran goaltender Mike McKenna rang up his second shutout of the season in Sunday’s win in Manchester, with 37 saves. That was McKenna’s eighth straight start in the Portland net and his 16th in the last 17 games.
