Rangers Acquire Goaltender Magnus Hellberg
Jul 1, 2015New York Rangers General Manager Jeff Gorton announced today that the team has acquired goaltender Magnus Hellberg from the Nashville Predators in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.
Hellberg, 24, appeared in 38 games with the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League (AHL) this past season, posting a 15-10-6 record, along with a 2.33 GAA, a .913 SV%, and 3 SO. He earned a win in each of his first six appearances of the season, allowing two goals or fewer in each of the six contests, and one goal or fewer in five of those games. Hellberg stopped all 31 shots he faced to earn a win and a shutout on Jan. 10 vs. Charlotte, and he made a season-high 36 saves on March 10 at Oklahoma City. In addition, Hellberg represented the Western Conference at the 2015 AHL All-Star Game.
The 6-6, 198-pounder has appeared in 98 career AHL games over three seasons, posting a 42-36-7 record, along with a 2.36 GAA, a .917 SV%, and 10 SO. Hellberg has posted a SV% of .911 or better in each of his three AHL seasons, and he has posted a GAA of 2.33 or better in two AHL campaigns. He was named AHL Goaltender of the Month in February of 2013, as he registered a 6-1-0 record, along with a 1.36 GAA, a .950 SV%, and 2 SO in eight appearances.
The Uppsala, Sweden native was originally selected by Nashville in the second round, 38th overall, of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
