Hartford Wolf Pack general manager Jim Schoenfeld announced today that the Wolf Pack have signed defenseman Clayton Barthel to an American Hockey League contract. In accordance with team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Barthel, a 21-year-old rookie out of the Western Hockey League, participated in both the New York Ranger and Wolf Pack training camps this season, and is currently on the roster of the Wolf Pack's ECHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.

Barthel skated last year with the WHL's Kelowna Rockets, and the 6-3, 200-pound blueliner registered eight goals and 10 assists for 18 points, to go along with 98 penalty minutes. Following the conclusion of his Junior season, Barthel joined the Phoenix Roadrunners of the ECHL, for whom he suited up for four regular-season games (one assist, six PIM) and four postseason contests.

A third-round selection (88th overall) by the Washington Capitals in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Barthel spent the previous four seasons with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL. In 327 career WHL games, he totaled 25 goals and 56 assists for 81 points and posted 452 minutes in penalties.
